This past year brought significant change for Crisis Centre BC, and it all stemmed from one core belief: everyone deserves support through crisis. Last year’s update ended with some uncertainty: with only 40% call answer rates, would joining forces with crisis line networks across British Columbia and Canada allow us to expand our reach and answer more calls?
I’m thrilled to share the answer is YES! As of September 2023, we are part of the BC Crisis Line Enhancement Project, an initiative which created a BC-wide network of crisis lines whose collective answer rate is trending at over 80%, and improving.
We followed up by joining the national 9-8-8 suicide crisis line in November 2023, which answers over 1,000 calls a day from folks, at an 87% answer rate, and improving. These initiatives are making a real difference: more people in British Columbia and across Canada are receiving the support they need in their most vulnerable moments.
Alongside the growth of our distress lines, our Centre prevented suicides through community-based training, bereavement support, youth programs online and in schools, and in our advocacy for a crisis care continuum that delivers the right support at the right time.

- Community Learning & Engagement: everyone has the power to help prevent suicide and crisis situations. We’ll continue developing accessible, impactful training programs that equip individuals with the skills and knowledge to support those in their circles.
- Distress Services: we’re dedicated to consistently answering a high volume of calls within collaborative networks. Our goal is to provide high-quality, respectful support that empowers callers to find their own strength and solutions.
