Suicide Prevention for Everyone

For youth ages 15 and up. This workshop invites participants to recognize the value of talking about suicide in an open and thoughtful manner, and teaches basic steps to support persons with thoughts of suicide to get qualified help.

  • We offer this workshop on a rolling basis at a limited capacity.

This single-session (in-person only) youth workshop focuses on suicide awareness and prevention. It’s geared towards youth in grades 10 to 12, as well as older folks.

Suicide Prevention for Everyone aims to challenge the stigma and taboo surrounding the topic of suicide. It brings the issue of suicide into focus, and encourages youth to self-reflect, and learn how to be alert to the needs of people who are thinking about suicide, in order to support them to safety.

Available at no cost and limited capacity to schools and youth organizations across Vancouver, Burnaby and the North Shore.

Format & Facilitators:

The workshop is delivered in-person, in a single 80 to 90-minute block. It is facilitated by our trained and experienced Youth Educators, who have a personal connection to the topic of suicide, and have facilitated other topics in many classrooms. Throughout the session participants are gently encouraged engage in this important discussion at their comfort level and in spite of natural discomfort.

Key messages:

  • Suicide affects us all, in spite of many of us having little knowledge about it.
  • Prevention starts with conversation. It is not easy, but we all can raise our level of comfort when talking about suicide.
  • Most people with thoughts of suicide want help to stay alive.
  • We can learn to be alert to their needs and support them in seeking the right support.
  • It takes community to prevent suicide. Never keep suicide a secret.
  • Where to seek qualified help: an overview of local suicide prevention resources and crisis lines.
  • We all, as individuals, can contribute to a suicide-safer world.

* Given that suicide is the central theme of this workshop, we require that a school counsellor or trained staff oversee the whole session, as well as brief the students in advance about the purpose of our visit.

This workshop is supported by a grant and is free to local schools at a limited capacity.

Our Impact The topic and word "suicide" is not so scary after taking a training from the Crisis Centre of BC. I'm grateful to have been here today, and am hopeful that I can help people in the future. safeTALK participant, Agassiz
