Volunteer Appreciation Night 2010

During this year’s National Volunteer Week, the Crisis Centre hosted its annual Volunteer Appreciation Night on Friday April 30th, 2010 in honour of our 350+ volunteers.  Their generous contribution to the community was celebrated with a dinner, live entertainment, awards and prizes.

As a safe place to turn to when there seems to be no hope, the Crisis Centre has operated the regional 24/7 distress line service since 1969.  Highly-trained volunteers support individuals in crisis and empower them to see their own strengths and options.  Our volunteers also deliver the web-based crisis chat service at www.YouthInBC.com and facilitate workshops on stress management and suicide prevention in local high schools.  Here is what one of our callers had to say about the amazing work that our volunteers are doing:

“I called at 3am today, and spoke with a wonderful woman who really, deeply, helped me.  I truly felt that I had nowhere else to turn, and now I don’t feel that way anymore. My partner said I should send you flowers, but of course we were both anonymous in this conversation.  Anyways, instead of flowers I’m sending a note to express my gratitude, and to thank you for a very effective crisis line.”

It’s certainly not the first time we’ve heard from a caller that they wish they could send something to our volunteers to show how much they appreciate what they have done for them – but most callers feel like they can’t do that, because they choose to remain anonymous, or because it is not something they can afford.  That’s why we turn to our supporters and local businesses to show the volunteers how much they are appreciated in the community, with donations of gift baskets, event tickets, gift certificates and other prizes to be given out at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Night.

Thank you to the businesses and individuals who donated prizes to recognize and reward our volunteers!
